EMBIO Diagnostics has reached an important milestone for both the company and Cyprus’ innovation ecosystem, becoming the first Cypriot company to secure funding under the EIC Pre-Accelerator – Widening, part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. The funding will support the development of RapidX – Real-time Access to Predictive Intelligent Diagnostics – eXpert sensing, a breakthrough AI-enabled platform designed to transform real-time industrial diagnostics.
RapidX is a disruptive deep-tech innovation developed by EMBIO Diagnostics to transform the way porous industrial materials are tested, monitored and evaluated. The project will focus on the development and validation of a portable, AI-enabled electrochemical diagnostic platform capable of rapidly assessing the performance of materials such as cementitious products, construction materials and granular activated carbon used in water-treatment applications.
Today, many critical industrial decisions still depend on centralized laboratory testing methods that can take 24 to 72 hours, require specialized equipment and skilled operators, involve chemical reagents and generate additional cost and waste. RapidX aims to address this long-standing “laboratory bottleneck” by enabling fast, on-site and reagent-free diagnostics that support real-time decision-making in industrial environments.
At the heart of RapidX is EMBIO Diagnostics’ expertise in electrochemical sensing, biosensor engineering, cloud-connected diagnostics and AI-enabled analytics. Building on EMBIO’s existing B.EL.D™ technology architecture, RapidX will use electrochemical signals and advanced AI models to generate actionable insights related to the performance, porosity and lifecycle behaviour of industrial porous materials.
Through this project, EMBIO Diagnostics will lead the technological development, validation, intellectual property management, commercialisation strategy and investor-readiness pathway for RapidX. The company will advance the platform from laboratory-validated prototype stage towards a pre-commercial, CE-ready demonstrator, with planned validation in real operational environments.
The potential impact of RapidX extends across sectors where material performance, energy efficiency, resource optimisation and environmental compliance are critical. For the cement and construction industries, the platform has the potential to support faster quality control, improved process optimisation and reduced energy use. In water-treatment applications, it can support better monitoring of filtration materials, predictive maintenance and more sustainable asset management.
The EIC Pre-Accelerator – Widening programme supports promising deep-tech startups with high-impact innovation potential, helping them mature their technologies, strengthen their business model and prepare for future investment and scale-up opportunities. For EMBIO Diagnostics, this funding marks a significant milestone in the company’s evolution from a research-driven diagnostic technology company into a European deep-tech leader in sustainable, AI-enabled industrial diagnostics.
